Executive Summary:

Attached is the Schaumburg Police Department annual report which an overview of key police department activities and statistics. This year’s report goes beyond statistics and highlights many of the community outreach events and special initiates by the department. In 2022, there were 55,881 police incidents, representing a 3.4% increase from 2021. The 2022 police incident activity is an increase of 27.0% over the 2016-2021 yearly average calls of 43,985. Officer initiated incidents increased in 2022 by 5.3%, primarily a result of increased traffic stops and self-initiated arrests. Some other key statistical information in the report includes:

  • There were no murders in the village in 2022.
  • Motor Vehicle Thefts increased by 41.3%. This type of activity is associated with an on-going Chicagoland crime pattern. Throughout the year we have provided crime prevention and security suggestions to car dealership management. We met with management to provide additional guidance, including an analysis of reported incidents; we increased patrol efforts and continue to conduct analysis and intelligence gathering. In the area of non-commercial vehicle thefts, a large number were preventable, with officers noting keys were left in unlocked cars or vehicles were left unattended and running. We will continue crime prevention efforts to educate the public.
  • Incidents of weapon offenses remain infrequent although the department had 29 reported incidents, with 97% resulting in arrests. Over one-third of the weapons offenses were a direct result of self-initiated police activity, typically traffic stops for routine driving offenses resulting in the recovery of weapons and ammunition.
  • Cannabis related arrests and citations increased by 70% in 2021. These offenses increased another 39.4% in 2022. The increase is related to the identification of high frequency locations coupled with increased enforcement. The most common locations were public parking lots. Apartment, hotel, and shopping center parking lots had the greatest number of arrests. There were no arrests made at cannabis dispensaries who have done a good job policing their parking lots and surrounding areas. Anecdotally, increased drug usage has been seen since the beginning of the pandemic along with the changing of attitudes about cannabis usage since legalization, likely contributing to the increases. Again, most of these incidents were from self-initiated police activity.
  • Residential Burglaries increased from 27 to 30. However, this number is almost 40% below the five-year average.

Incidents of violent crime decreased with overall Part 1 crimes decreasing by 8.8%. The decrease was primarily a result of lower Illinois Department of Employment Security (IDES) fraud reports. However, catalytic converter thefts and motor vehicle thefts remained high. Criminal activity has increased across the Chicagoland region and nationally in each of these crime trends. We have implemented crime prevention, crime analysis, and extensive pro-active enforcement and investigative efforts to combat activity in each area.

The Real Time Information Center has increased our ability to utilize cameras and Automatic License Plate Reader (ALPR) systems. Trained staff have been able to identify and track suspects, leading to arrest situations. This has also increased our ability to provide intelligence and safety information to officers as they respond to calls for service. Expansion of the system is planned for 2023.
